Geography Students Explore NSW South Coast
Last week, Year 10 Geography ventured to the NSW South Coast for some oceanographic fieldwork.
Over the three days, the students from our landlocked school got to familiarise themselves with both the rocky shore and the mangrove estuary ecosystems in Kiama and Minnamurra.
Facilitated by the Illawarra Environmental Education Centre, the excursion included snorkelling, searching tidal pools for periwinkle, starfish, crabs and sea slugs, wading through Minnamurra mangroves, fishing, dip netting, canoeing, paddleboarding and sunset walks on the beach.
"I had so much fun snorkelling,” recounts students Serah Langi, “I had never done it before and it was such a cool experience to swim in the saltwater and see so many fish swimming around us!"
"I really liked exploring the rock pools and getting to examine all the different ocean creatures," adds Addison Cowie.
“I was so impressed with how engaged all students were throughout the trip, how well they participated in all activities and how much knowledge they have demonstrated and gained throughout the program,” explains Geography teacher Caprice Skinner, “I’m sure this experience has given all students some lifelong memories.”
“Thank you to the IEEC for this fantastic opportunity,” Miss Skinner continues, “The class will now use the data for upcoming in class assessment tasks.”
