Wayfinder Program Matches Pasifika Students with Mentors

Last Wednesday, we invited upstanding members of the Pacific Islander community to talk to our students about their lives and careers for the Pasifika Wayfinders initiative.

Run by the school’s Pacific Island Liaison Officer Nau Mahe, the program is aimed at Year 10 students who are starting to envision life beyond school. By bringing mentors to the school to share their own stories, Miss Mahe hopes to expose the students to the wide variety of career opportunities open to them.

Among the panel was electrician David Cook, plumber Niu George, Pastor Kepueli Vaka, Mechanical Fitter Fidow Fusi, NSW Police Senior Constable Semiti Beitaki and apprentice at Codemo Engineering James Uoifalelahi.

The common thread through the presentations was that none of the speakers knew what they wanted to do with their lives when they were fifteen. Many of them entered their current careers later in life, so it’s never too late to pursue your dreams.

“Our Pasifika Programs at GHS aim to strengthen identity, belonging and Pasifka pride,” explains Miss Mahe, “Staying connected to culture reminds students who they are, where they come from, while bringing the village together to support, guide and raise our young people.”

The program will continue fortnightly through to the end of the year.
